Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
