Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each person so that their own personal challenges can be addressed in treatment.
