Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
