Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be addressed in rehab.
