Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehab.
