Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
