Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be remedied in rehab.
