Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their particular challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
