Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face.
