Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person so that their own challenges can be remedied in rehab.
