Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may set off drug abuse, or risky sexual conduct because of drug use may have caused the person to contract the disease. People who have HIV/AIDS, either due to their substance abuse or as a pre-existing condition before their substance abuse issue, often require treatment services tailored to meet their specific demands and problems. A few of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that drug users with HIV/AIDS rarely care for themselves and take the appropriate medications they need to preserve their health. Therefore, these individuals arrive to treatment in very poor health and this will have to be handled as a priority whilst addressing other crucial issues. Aside from the obvious requirement to provide medical solutions whilst in treatment, those that have HIV/AIDS will also need to tackle deeper problems which prompted their alcohol or drug use. Often, people have circumstances in their lives which are strictly environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, like oppressive circumstances within their lives or damaging relationships. These are the issues which rehabilitation counselors will focus on as part of HIV/AIDS treatment services.
