Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be handled in treatment.
