Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
