Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in rehab.
