Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular problems can be remedied in treatment.
