Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
