Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own problems can be treated in rehab.
