Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
