Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for everybody so that their particular challenges can be treated in treatment.
