Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be worthwhile in circumstances where traditional rehabilitation settings have not meet expectations, such as coping with situations in a women's life which can be distinctive and painful. Such issues may have to do with sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or other significant issues that are particular to women. Research shows that women could also get embroiled in abusing drugs more easily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness because of dependency problems than males consequently. Because of obligations in their home, women also tend to put off seeking out and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. With this in mind, treatment services for women are created to ensure that a women's needs are the focus and priority. Just like coed programs, drug rehabilitation programs that provide rehabilitation services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a starting point. After this step, counselors help women concentrate on both standard and gender-specific issues who have prompted their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from their female peers, and some programs which offer rehab services to women provide client beds for her kids.
