Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
