Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
