Sadly, the simple truth is that millions of people make the decision to drive an automobile while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. This not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers in danger as well, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not result in severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even jail time. Quite often a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse problem. The court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug rehabilitation instead of other serious consequences for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other effects of the crime, but tends to decrease the degree of such consequences to a great extent. Particularly if the individual willingly participates in alcohol and drug rehabilitation and is a first-time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of people who do receive drug rehabilitation because of a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for comparable charges later on.
