Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may set off substance abuse, or risky sexual conduct due to substance abuse could have caused the person to contract the sickness. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either on account of their drug abuse or as a pre-existing condition just before their drug abuse problem, often require rehabilitation services tailored to fulfill their specific needs and challenges. Some of these problems are physical in nature, because of the fact that drug users with HIV/AIDS rarely look after themselves and take the appropriate medications they need to maintain their own health. Because of this, these individuals arrive to rehab in very poor health and this will have to be handled as a priority whilst dealing with other important issues. Besides the obvious necessity to offer medical services whilst in rehabilitation, individuals with HIV/AIDS will also need to address more deeply rooted problems which prompted their alcohol or drug use. Usually, individuals have situations in their lives that happen to be purely environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, such as oppressive situations within their lives or damaging relationships. These are the issues which rehabilitation counselors will target in HIV/AIDS treatment services.
