Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be remedied in treatment.
