Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
