Individuals who want to maintain a certain amount of flexibility in their lives can engage in an outpatient rehab when they need rehab for substance abuse. Outpatient rehab makes it possible for the rehab client to participate in treatment services without the commitment one would usually have to consent to in an inpatient or residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. This doesn't always work in the rehab client's favor however, particularly for those clients who need to resolve substantial substance abuse problems. So even though an outpatient rehab might appear to be an expedient possibility, it isn't for everyone. Those that do decide on an outpatient rehab will typically show up at meetings and take part in counseling and rehab services on a part-time basis every day or several days each week. This can be very helpful for those who have recently completed a much more extensive inpatient or residential program as an effective aftercare or maintenance step, or someone with only a short history of drug use which is usually a really small number of clients. For somebody with more serious drug abuse and dependency issues, inpatient or residential drug and alcohol treatment programs which offer treatment over a long-term basis will probably be the more beneficial rehab alternative.
