Regrettably, it is a fact that millions of people make the decision to operate a vehicle while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers at risk as well, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically lead to severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases jail time. In many cases someone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse challenge. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation instead of other extreme consequences because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely get rid of other consequences of the crime, but could decrease the degree of such penalties to a great extent. Particularly if the person willingly participates in drug and alcohol treatment and is a first time offender. Studies have shown that a large proportion of those who do receive drug treatment for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for similar charges down the road.
