Unfortunately, the simple truth is that millions of people decide to drive an automobile while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Doing so not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers and others at risk too, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not cause serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and even jail time. Sometimes somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying substance abuse problem. The court system understands this, and is therefore inclined to provide DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol rehabilitation rather than other serious penalties because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in alcohol and drug rehabilitation as a DUI/DWI Offender might not completely eliminate other effects from the crime, but could decrease the severity of such penalties to a large degree. Particularly if the individual willingly participates drug treatment and is a first-time offender. Studies have shown that a large percentage of individuals who do receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges down the road.
