Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each individual so that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
