Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be handled in treatment.
