Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be addressed in treatment.
