Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
