Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
