Unfortunately, it is a fact that millions of people make the decision to drive a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing this not merely puts one's life in danger and puts passengers at risk at the same time, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually lead to serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and in many cases jail time. Quite often someone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse challenge. The court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug treatment rather than other serious penalties because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in alcohol and drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other penalties from the crime, but can decrease the seriousness of such consequences to a large degree. Specifically if the individual willingly participates alcohol and drug treatment and is a first time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of individuals who do receive drug rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the courts for similar charges in the future.
