Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in treatment.
