Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
