Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
