Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
