Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
