Offering gender-specific rehab services has proven worthwhile in circumstances where conventional treatment settings have fallen short, for example coping with situations in the women's life that are distinctive and traumatic. Such issues may relate to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, and other significant issues which are specific to women. Research has revealed that women may also get involved in drug abuse more easily than men, and therefore are more predisposed to illness as a consequence of drug abuse issues than males consequently. Because of responsibilities in the home, women also tend to put off trying to find and receiving treatment, a situation which can lead to catastrophe. With this in mind, rehabilitation services for women are designed so that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. Similar to coed programs, drug and alcohol treatment facilities that provide rehab services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a starting point. After this step, counselors help women focus on both standard and gender specific issues who have prompted their substance abuse. Women also may take advantage of the positive support from other female peers, plus some programs that provide rehab services to women offer client beds for their young children.
