Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
