Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs.
