Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique problems can be remedied in treatment.
