Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
