Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual so that their unique challenges can be handled in treatment.
