Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in rehab.
