Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
