Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
