Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own problems can be remedied in treatment.
